Meet Melissa: Administrative Associate

Meet Melissa: Administrative Associate

This fall, we were thrilled to start the new school year in our new school building in Bradford County. Over the next several weeks, we look forward to sharing more about the passionate and mission-driven team. Melissa is an Administrative Associate who is committed to spreading positivity to everyone she encounters!

What is your favorite thing about working at River Rock Academy?

The staff and students! The family bond that we have among staff members is amazing! For the students, I enjoy knowing that they feel loved and welcomed. I want them to see happiness and know that we are here for each and every one of them.

How do you make an impact on students’ lives?

I am a mom, and I’ve loved being a mom since I became one. That’s the role that I am to every student that walks through the doors. I treat every child as if they were my own and I want nothing more than what’s best for them!

What does a “day in the life” look like for your role?

I start my day by greeting everyone and giving them a smile. I believe the day goes well when people are happy. When I greet students, I ask them how their night was. Depending on their answers, I discuss how things could have been better or what they could have done to help the situation. If it was a good night, ask what the future holds for them. I want them to know that I am asking these things because I care about them and want to know how they are doing.

Can you talk about your career trajectory and what led you to where you are now?

I am honored to have this job and to take part in all the lives that I am involved with every day, both student and staff! I worked in the public school system for 12 years. I stepped away for a short period of time and realized that I needed to be involved with students. I realized I could make a difference in their lives.

What has been your proudest moment of accomplishment in your role?

We had a student come into the program last year and, like every other student, I asked him to follow the River Rock rules. He was not a fan. He really didn’t like me. Regardless, I still greeted him and treated him with kindness and, by the time he left, our relationship had completely changed to one of mutual respect. That showed me that structure is a key aspect with any student. The moment he bought in and accepted that I was here to help him was such a proud moment!

What are you most excited about for our new location in Bradford County?

The space we now have. The room to be able to grow and accept more students so we can make a difference in their everyday lives.

What is a fun fact about you not many people know?

I love life; I love all it has to offer. There is always something to be grateful for…. except snakes and bugs. I hate them. I think they are nasty, and they creep me out. Every time I think I can get over it, my fear gets worse.
