Myth 1: AEDY programs are just punishment for bad behavior. 

Truth:
AEDY programs are not punitive by design. They are structured, supportive environments that aim to address the root causes of a student’s behavior. These programs combine academic instruction, behavioral interventions, and counseling to help students develop the skills they need to return to a regular education setting and succeed. 

Myth 2: Students in AEDY programs can’t learn or succeed academically. 

Truth:
AEDY programs provide academic instruction aligned with state standards and individualized to meet each student’s needs. Many students make significant academic gains in these programs, especially when they receive consistent support and tailored instruction that they may have lacked in traditional settings. 

Myth 3: Once a student is placed in AEDY, they’re stuck there.

AEDY placements are meant to be temporary and transitional. Students regularly undergo reviews to determine progress and readiness to return to their home public school. The goal is always reintegration into the general education environment, not permanent removal. 

Myth 4: AEDY programs are only for students with severe behavioral issues.

While AEDY programs serve students who demonstrate disruptive behaviors, these behaviors may stem from a variety of challenges including trauma, mental health struggles, or unmet academic needs. Many students thrive once these root causes are addressed through therapeutic and academic supports.

Students learn communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills in a safe, structured environment, often with more individualized attention than they would receive in a larger school setting.
