Mayor of Williamsport Visits River Rock Academy!
On Friday, November 1, 2024, students at River Rock Academy’s Williamsport campus had a unique opportunity to sit down with Derek Slaughter, the Mayor of Williamsport, for a Q&A session about new developments in the community. Mayor Slaughter shared exciting updates, including plans for a new Chick-fil-A and Wawa coming to the Williamsport area. He explained the extensive planning and work involved in bringing these popular fast-food chains to the community.
The mayor also discussed the addition of new parks designed to provide positive outlets for local youth. These parks will feature basketball courts, a baseball field, a BMX bike park, and a skateboarding area. In the past, the community’s basketball courts were allowed to deteriorate, leaving young people without suitable recreational options. Mayor Slaughter outlined his vision for an outreach program at these park locations to help keep youth engaged and encourage them to report community issues. He shared a recent example: on October 31, the city held a community Halloween event to bring families together before trick-or-treating.
After the Q&A, students and Mayor Slaughter enjoyed a friendly match on the basketball court, rounding off an inspiring and engaging visit. When asked about the visit, our Campus Director, Wes King, said, “The students really enjoyed visiting with the Mayor and learning about the opportunities coming to the Williamsport area. He also encouraged the students not to let certain situations define them. The highlight of the visit was the basketball competition involving the students and the Mayor. We are hopeful that he returns for a rematch soon.”
It was a great time for all and we are honored the Mayor paid us a visit!
